Osteopathy

At Integrated Health, we understand the importance of a holistic approach in helping you to achieve your goals.

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions, including aches and pains, digestive disorders and breathing problems. Osteopathic treatment works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together whilst considering other factors that may effect the healing process such as environmental stresses and nutrition.

Osteopathy utilises a wide range of techniques including massage, joint mobilization, physical manipulation and stretching. This breadth of approach, careful listening and observation of the precise needs of the individual, ensures treatment is directed towards helping facilitate your body’s own healing mechanisms. Osteopaths may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

What is the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy?

We are often asked this question as we have both professions in one clinic.

Generally, there are now many similarities between osteopathy and physiotherapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions but the two professions have originated from different roots and so one could argue that the greatest difference today is found in ideology and training. In today's private practice, the two professions treat pretty much the same problem - equally sucessfully - albeit with a slightly different approach. This, however, is practitioner dependent with their training, speciality and experience playing a role.

Who you decide to see depends on personal preference. The aim of the treatment is the same, but the style of treatment can be different - however, this can also be true between individuals within the same profession. It is worth noting that both professions will vary their approach and technique according to the individual and their physique.

The advantage of having both professions in one clinic, is that there a team effort in helping you achieve your goals. If any of our practitioners think that you would be better treated by a different profession, then they will recommend this to you.

But most importantly of all, if you have a problem do something about it now by seeing either a physiotherapist or an osteopath rather than seeing no one at all!
